Youth – Orhei

Participate in a youth camp outside the city of Orhei, Moldova, in a hugely successful youth camp, and assist the Bessarabian (Moldovan) Church’s newly founded youth movement. In Moldova, many obstacles are challenging the youth in their Christian walk due to new found freedoms in this struggling nation.

The 2013 Moldova Youth Mission Team will travel to Orhei, Moldova to offer an Orthodox Youth Camp for teenagers and assist OCMC missionary Christina Semon build an Orthodox foundation for the youth of Moldova. The camp program will include Bible and religious studies, sports, arts and crafts, and fellowship. The Team will also visit surrounding communities and historic sites within the Diocese.

Young Moldovans are facing many obstacles in their Christian walk due to new found freedoms in this struggling nation and the social pressure that living in an increasingly westernized society places on them. There are very few youth programs offered by the Church and little motivation for the youth to regularly come to church. The weakened state of the family in Moldova (many of the adults have left the country to find work which means leaving their children with guardians or grandparents) and the plague of generations of atheism has also weakened the spiritual foundations of the youth.

Moldova is Europe’s poorest nation due to persistent and unresolved political problems, lack of industry and trade, economic dependence, and lingering effects of communism. The Orthodox Church regained strong influence but still needs assistance to deepen the spiritual life of the faithful, and offer age appropriate church programs for the youth to participate in order to fight against temptations and encourage them to follow Christ through any type of obstacle.

Cost: $1,585 + airfare

* Airfare not included in Team costs. Team members must travel on scheduled dates; air travel to be coordinated with OCMC; ground transportation will be provided. Team members are encouraged to raise the additional funds to cover the cost of domestic and international travel.
