Youth Outreach – Ouzinkie
Help the Church in Alaska continue to enhance its youth ministry by offering a camp for children and teenagers in the Kodiak Deanery. Participate in a VCS camp program that focuses on deepening the youth’s understanding of the Church and empowering them to maintain an Orthodox witness, in the place where Orthodoxy came as a young missionary faith to the native peoples of Alaska. Individuals with past camp experience and a willingness to work hard are encouraged to apply.
Travel to Kodiak Island, Alaska and then participate in a camp program for children and teenagers from the Kodiak Deanery in Ouzinkie. Work side by side with elders and adults in the community and empower the youth to live as Orthodox Christians in these socially challenging times. The camp will incorporate lessons on the Faith, living as Orthodox in this world, a Christian understanding of social media, as well as arts and crafts, music and sports.
It has been over two hundred years since the Orthodox Christian Faith was proclaimed on the shores of Alaska, and for this reason, it is often considered America’s Holy Land. Orthodoxy has become central to many of the native Alaskan cultures. The Church faces many challenges as she continues to maintain an Orthodox witness and proclaim Christ while equipping a new generation of future believers and leaders to know and live their faith.
Team members will meet in Kodiak, Alaska for orientation and travel by boat or plane to Ouzinkie. Team members will be housed in the Community Center in Ouzinkie with the campers. All members should be prepared to share and teach the Orthodox Faith.
Discover Alaska’s unique Orthodox heritage by participating in an OCMC youth team to Kodiak. Family participation is welcome. Youth workers, church school teachers, camp counselors are encouraged to apply!
