2014 Kenya Construction Team

Traveling From: 6/17/2014 to 7/1/2014; Team Cost: $1310*

Holistic - Construction, Teaching, Health Turkana

Assist with a holistic approach to Missions in Lokichar, a remote village outside of Lodwar. This unique Team opportunity will incorporate construction, religious education and health care in one Team opportunity.

Work alongside the Turkana tribe in this remote region of Kenya, to build the Church of St. Nicholas in the community of Lokichar; teach about Orthodoxy; or offer basic health care and education. The 2014 Kenya Team has been invited by Archbishop Makarios of Kenya to help three dedicated Orthodox clergy of the Turkana region nurture and expand the Church. Team members will participate in the consecration of the St. Peter Church in nearby Loupwala (aided by the 2012 Orthodox Mission Teams).

About 9% of Kenya’s population belongs to peoples only marginally impacted by the Gospel. Lodwar, the largest town in northwestern Kenya with a population of 17,000, is the capital of the Turkana District. The Turkana, who live in this remote region, are a Nilotic people numbering less than half a million people, are noted for raising camels and weaving baskets. In their oral traditions, they designate themselves the people of the grey bull. The Turkana people are one of the least evangelized people groups on the continent. Share the Gospel and teach the faith in rural areas outside of Lodwar. Continue to build a relationship with the Kenyans and share your Faith by providing outreach to the Turkana tribe.

Lokichar is situated in the heart of the dusty and arid Turkana basin in the Rift Valley, 550 km from Nairobi. Until 2010 Lokichar had a population under 1,000. The 2011 discovery of oil has started to transform the area.

Educators or those with construction or health care experience requested, but not necessary. Participants must be in good physical condition, willing to sleep in tents and hike through the desert.

Bring the Good News of salvation to villages in the desert region of Turkana.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
