A Successful Mission Sunday at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Seattle, WA

On Sunday, February 18th, before the start of Great Lent, St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Seattle, WA, participated in OCMC’s annual Mission Sunday, a day designated to pray for and to support Orthodox Missions. The church hosted special guest speaker Dr. Olympia Tachopoulou to give a talk during Liturgy about her time serving on an OCMC short-term Medical Mission Team to Aguacate, Guatemala.

Dr. Tachopoulou, a specialist in infectious diseases in Tacoma, WA, was named in the Best Doctors 2017 issue of Seattle Magazine and is a member of the Board of South Sound Women in Medicine. Dr. Tachopoulou made a wonderful addition to the November 2017 Guatemala medical mission team, where she and other medical providers volunteered at the Fr. Andres Giron Clinic in Aguacate.

Dr. Tachopoulou shared her experience with the parish of St. Demetrios, where her words were inspiring and heartfelt as she described how she and other team members treated hundreds of the Mayan people who needed it most. She also spoke highly of OCMC's long-term missionaries in Guatemala and concluded by emphasizing the need for worldwide Orthodox Missions and the growth of the Church.

During Liturgy, a special tray dedicated to OCMC was passed around. Afterwards, OCMC Parish Ambassadors Chris and Paula Macris held the traditional annual Lenten Deli Sale, offering a variety of mostly fast-worthy food items, which sold out within half an hour; all proceeds from the sale each year go to OCMC. The Deli Sale was begun by Chris's mother Eugenia, of blessed memory, who served for many years as a very active OCMC Ambassador for the parish. Her one-year Memorial Service was also held on Mission Sunday. The Macris family was a benefactor of the Mission Center building in St. Augustine, FL.

Also showcased at St. Demetrios was a display table with various OCMC literature, coin boxes, and donation envelopes, as well as a slide show of photos showing the Guatemala Medical Team at work, which helped further the Mission Sunday success.

Overall, St. Demetrios raised a total of almost $2,800 for Orthodox Missions.

The Orthodox Christian Mission Center thanks everyone who participated in Mission Sunday. Thank you to Dr. Tachopoulou for sharing her missionary experience, and to OCMC Parish Ambassadors Chris and Paula Macris. And a special thank you to the St. Demetrios parish for the wonderful job they do every year to make Mission Sunday a success.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
