OCMC News - Laikipia Farm Project: Hope for Sustainability in Kenya

OCMC News - Laikipia Farm Project: Hope for Sustainability in Kenya
His Grace Bishop Neofitos stands among the first crop of the Laikipia Farm Project which was begun with the help of OCMC to help the Church in the Diocese of Nyeri become more self-reliant.

In spite of torrential rains, the first harvest of the Laikipia, Kenya, farm project has survived. The Diocese of Nyeri and Mt. Kenya, with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Neofitos and in partnership with OCMC, began this agricultural project in Laikipia with the hope to create sustainability, and thanks be to Christ that the rains have not flooded the land or hurt the crops.

And now the crops are almost ready to be harvested.

During this first year, half of the proceeds from the harvest will be given to a local school to assist the children and the functioning of the school, while the other half will be invested to buy additional farmland.

In following years, half of the revenue will continue to support the school while the other half will be invested in other sustainability projects within the diocese.

Growth and self-sufficiency are very important to the vision for the Nyeri Diocese. Initiatives such as this can provide food and economic growth for the diocese and its members. Such projects are a huge success for everyone involved.

The Laikipia project is especially dear to Fr. Martin Ritsi, the Executive Director of OCMC, for several reasons. For one, it was a cooperative effort with FILANTROPIA, the international missions agency of the Orthodox Church of Finland, “which is something we want to do more of.” Furthermore, Fr. Martin asserts that such sustainability projects are “actually where we hope things are moving in the future. If we can find success with this project, and some others we are trying in different places, the model will be multiplied and expanded!"

Please pray that the farmers will be able to generate enough income for the diocese to work toward becoming self-supporting. If this initiative proves to be a fruitful task, it could help shape future sustainability projects.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
