2019 Sweden Youth Work Team

Traveling From: 10/23/2019 to 11/4/2019; Team Cost: $1200*

Stockholm – In this era of post-modernism, the youth of Sweden are looking to the Church for truth. Be a part of this first OCMC team to Sweden and encourage the faithful in their Orthodox walk.

The 2019 Sweden Youth Team will be based in Stockholm and participate in various events geared towards young adult religious engagement. In addition to a weekend event that will introduce ideas for youth ministry and offer religious instruction, there will be time to connect and discuss the struggles and joys of being an Orthodox young adult and offer encouragement to grow in commitment to the Church. The Team will plan an outreach event and have time for fellowship.

The largest of the Scandinavian countries, a land of mountains and forests, Sweden is a highly developed nation with one of the highest standards of living in the world. While it considers itself a place of complete freedom of religion, the nation is highly secularized and is systematically marginalizing religious views in the public sphere. In recent statistics, 20% of Swedes believe there is no God and over 50% believe that religion is unimportant in their lives.

Immigration after WWII from Greece and other Balkan countries created a boom in Orthodoxy in Sweden half a century ago. Once again, an recent influx of immigrants and refugees (estimated at 400,000 last year) who come from regions where the Orthodox Church is established, are creating a huge need to develop ministry and programs. Polls show that the 1,000-year-old Lutheran Church in Sweden is losing members, but this is a time for growth for the Orthodox Church.

The Holy Metropolis of Sweden and All Scandinavia is composed of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, and its see is based in Stockholm. There are 8 communities and 1 monastery in Sweden with others in Norway, Denmark and Iceland. Its Metropolitan is Cleopas of Sweden and All Scandinavia and was established on August 12, 1969 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. His Eminence Cleopas was born in Greece and studied at the Universities of Athens, Thessaloniki, Durham (England), Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Harvard Divinity School, and Boston University. He served as a professor at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Queens College, and the University of Massachusetts.

Share in a journey of faith… Orthodox Mission Team members are challenged to view the world with God's eyes and seek how He wants to use them to fulfill His plans. This cross-cultural experience, combined with outreach, offers participants a life-changing learning experience. This experience is about people, culture and missions. It is also about prayer, for you and others; it is about God, those you serve, and about yourself, as you serve Him.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
