Ascension: Proclaiming the Gospel to the Ends of the Earth

Apolytikion of Holy Ascension–Fourth Tone
St. Luke’s account of the Feast of the Ascension, as recorded in today's reading from the Acts of the Apostles, concludes with these words, "...and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). This is the work in which the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) is engaged through your support. As V. Rev. George Florovsky states, "The very existence of the Church is the fruit of the Ascension. It is in the Church that man’s nature is truly ascended to the Divine heights." Being Christ’s witnesses by bringing all people to Him, helping to establish His Church, and sharing His love are the goals of OCMC.
Our mission is found in our Lord’s final command at His Ascension: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). The Church, as the Body of Christ, must continue His work by proclaiming His Resurrection and demonstrating His love. OCMC missionaries, global partners, and supporters are dedicated to sharing the Gospel and serving as examples of the ongoing power of His Ascension.
As we celebrate the Feast, we are reminded to reflect on our individual contributions to furthering the Church's mission. Whether through prayer, supporting mission initiatives, or offering our talents in the mission field, each of us can find our unique purpose. Backing organizations like OCMC and our partners within the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States enables us to draw others closer to God's love. The Ascension highlights the transformative power of Christ's Resurrection and His directive for us to continue His work. This mission is ongoing, and each of us plays a part in spreading the Gospel to those who need to hear it.
While we participate in the Church’s mission, let us take heart that we do so emboldened by Christ, who promises us, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20).
