OCMC News - Preach Christ Crucified! Take Up Your Cross for Missions!
Please take up your cross and share the Orthodox Christian Faith through missions as the new Church year begins. Millions of people around the world desperately need your support and the gift of hope in Christ.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

There are no shortcuts!

The journey of an Albanian born after the fall of communism, an Indonesian living as a religious minority, a Kenyan struggling to survive a decade’s long drought, or an American couched in the comforts of the modern world all require the same thing to reach the destination of eternal life.

Each require taking up their cross and following Christ. As a prayerful supporter of Orthodox Missions, you have taken up your cross so that others may do the same. It is not enough that people are told about Christ. They must be invited and encouraged to follow Him!

For thousands of Orthodox Christians in the United States, taking up the cross has looked like volunteering for a mission team or serving as an OCMC missionary. What does it look like for those they meet in the mission field? For a gift of $100, $150, or $200 it can look like the following:

  • In Guatemala, for young men from rural villages that are embracing the Faith, it looks like being trained as a catechist to teach Orthodoxy in the absence of having a full-time priest.
  • In Albania, for college students in the capital of Tirana, it looks like participating in campus ministry that reaches out to young men and women who may have grown up without any knowledge of, or belief in, God.
  • In Indonesia, for a handful of Orthodox priests, it may look like running orphanages and feeding programs that serve anyone in need.

Each of these are examples of how the love of Christ can be shared in the mission field and each are examples of ministries supported by the faithful of the United States just like you. None of them are possible without your prayers and sacrificial gifts.

In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he writes, “Brethren, the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing”. But, as an Orthodox Christian who supports the missionary outreach of the Church you know that the way of the cross is not folly.

Rather, like Paul you affirm that, “we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

Thank you for continuing to take up your cross and following Christ by sharing His truth, hope, and salvation with people all over the world through the mission ministries of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center.

In Christ,

Fr. Martin Ritsi
Executive Director

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
