OCMC News - Updates from the Church in Africa

OCMC News - Updates from the Church in Africa
His Beatitude Theodoros II, Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, presiding over the Holy and Sacred Synod.

On October 9, 2019, all of the hierarchs of the Patriarchate of Alexandria met for their Holy and Sacred Synod.

They began the day with the Divine Liturgy, in which Monk Parthenius Elnagar was ordained to the diaconate. His Beatitude Theodoros II, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, then gave a moving address about the issue of migration. He lamented all those people sacrificing their lives to escape the tragedy of war, turning the waters of the Mediterranean into a “tomb for a drop of freedom”.

Through the Synod’s deliberations, a few changes were made in the dioceses of Africa. The Holy Metropolis of Madagascar was subdivided into two: The Holy Metropolis of Antananarivo and Northern Madagascar, and the Holy Diocese of Toliara and South Madagascar. The Holy Diocese of Kisumu was also subdivided, with the Holy Diocese of Eldoret being established in Kenya, and with Bishop Markos (Theodosius) being elected as the new bishop of Kisumu, succeeding Bishop Athanasios (Akunda) of blessed memory. Finally, the Synod also reestablished the Holy Diocese of Bukoba in Tanzania.

A lot of these changes directly affect OCMC through the mission teams we send, as well as the priests we support through the SAMP program. Many of our teams and mission priests are in Kenya, so it’s especially encouraging for us to hear that the flock in Kenya is being taken care of, with another bishop being appointed to them.

Our Church is comprised of Orthodox Christians from all around the world – so it’s important for us to follow the news of our brothers and sisters in Christ! Please keep the churches of Africa in your prayers, and pray for OCMC too, that we may continue serving them and building bridges between the Orthodox in the US and those abroad.

Prayer for Missions

God of truth and love: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Hear our prayer for those who do not know You. That they may come to a saving knowledge of the truth, and that Your Name may be praised among all peoples of the world. Sustain, inspire, and enlighten Your servants who bring them the Gospel. Bring fresh vigor to wavering faith; sustain our faith when it is still fragile. Continually renew missionary zeal in ourselves and in the Church, and raise up new missionaries who will follow You to the ends of the world. Make us witnesses to Your goodness full of love, full of strength, and full of faith for Your glory and the salvation of the entire world. Through the prayers of all the missionary saints, Have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
